Taste the Authentic Flavors of Rome at Testaccio Market

Discover Rome

Are you in the vicinity of the Ostiense district, located in the southern part of Rome, and seeking an experience different from the typical tourist tours exploring the monuments and points of interest in the area south of the Circus Maximus?

In the historic Testaccio district, amidst the alleyways and squares that define this vibrant neighborhood on the left bank of the Tiber River, there’s a place where aromas, colors, and traditions blend to create a magical atmosphere of flavors and culture: we’re talking about the Testaccio Market.

A Journey Through History and Flavor at Testaccio Market

The Testaccio Market traces its roots back to a distant past and a symbolic location for Testaccini and Romans in general, Piazza Testaccio. From this historic spot, the old stalls were relocated to the brand-new site on Via Galvani in 2012. Spanning five thousand square meters, the market houses around a hundred commercial businesses, an underground parking lot of six thousand square meters, and a Roman archaeological area of seven thousand square meters, which is periodically open to visitors.

The connection between the new architecture and the site where it stands is further strengthened by the choice of materials: the use of terracotta cubes covering the facades is notable. They harken back to the presence of the nearby Monte dei Cocci, a hill that formed over time as shards of amphorae and other discarded materials deposited there, stratifying to become one with the surrounding nature. Additionally, the exposed steel structures pay homage to the many examples of early 20th-century industrial architecture present in the neighborhood.
The architectural style is minimal and contemporary, characterized by geometric rigor, white tones, and clean lines that create a pleasant contrast with the colors of the goods, the vitality of the stalls, and the hustle and bustle of people using the space.

Inspired by the outdoor markets in the squares of Rome, the design is open on all four sides, covered and protected from sun and rain, but with transparent and perforated panels allowing light and air to filter through. The architectural project bears the signature of architect Marco Rietti.

A 360-Degree experience

The Testaccio Market offers a European-style shopping experience, where you can buy raw ingredients to cook at home or enjoy a meal directly from some stalls, in the classic street food style. It’s a place to stop for a coffee and read a book, meet people, or celebrate. With over 60 stalls for shopping, dining, or grabbing a quick bite, you’ll find the typical dishes of Roman tradition: tripe, oxtail stew, meatballs in sauce, coratella with artichokes, pies, homemade bread, and many other products.

A Meeting point for the local community

The Testaccio Market is not just a place of commerce; it’s also a meeting point for the residents of Testaccio. Here, residents and tourists mingle daily, sharing stories, recipes, and culinary tips. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic fabric of a city in constant evolution.
